"Biome GO!" Activity

Last week, we did an activity called "Biome GO!"  It was kind of like "Pokemon GO!"

First, Mrs. Hire explained the activity, and then each student was paired up with a third grader from the other class.  Next, the kids had to go in our classroom, Mrs. Hire's classroom, and the hallway to "catch" animals from five different biomes: tundra, deciduous forest, aquatic/marine, tropical rainforest, and desert.  However, once they "caught" an animal, they had to go and read about its biome or habitat and its adaptations.  Then, they had to record that information onto their note page.

Once all thirty animals were "caught," they had to use their imaginations and come up with a "special power" (like in Pokemon) for each animal.  In order to do this, they needed to think about how each animal's adaptations already help it to survive in its biome.  So, they needed to "think outside of the box" and come up with a "special power" that each animal could use in addition to its own adaptations.  They also needed to keep in mind what kind of  biome each animal was in.  For example, "fire power" may not be as useful for a desert animal as it would be for an animal living in the tundra.

Next week, we will be using this activity as a springboard for a writing activity.  They will need to pick one of the animals and write an opinion essay in order to persuade their readers as to why/how the "special powers" would help their animal to survive better in its biome.

"Eat Like a Bird" Lab

This week, we have been observing the owls from Alessondra's OKC Great Horned Owl-Cam.  One of the eggs hatched last Saturday, and the other hatched this week.  They are sooooo cute!  So, we did a lab called "Eat Like a Bird" where we observed different birds' beaks and pretended to eat like them.

Below are some pictures from our lab.

We had to figure out which foods (gummy worm, Swedish fish, raisins, and sunflower seeds) would be easier to eat with a long, pointed beak (tweezers), a curved beak (clothespin), and a scooped beak (spoon).

Needless to say, Altera the owl showed us how it's done.  :)

WELCOME TO FRACTURED FAIRY TALE LAND!!! 3rd Grade's V.I.P. Day :)

On February 28, 2017, we had our Fractured Fairy Tale V.I.P. Day.  It was a way to show how hard the 3rd graders worked on this FUN AND CHALLENGING project.  First, after brainstorming with their families, they had to write their VERY OWN fractured fairy tale on the computer.  Then,  they revised and peer-edited their stories.  Next, they worked with Mrs. Pfeiffer to be sure that their stories sounded okay and made sense.  After that, they illustrated their stories on Power Point.  During this time (at home), they worked on their trifold.  On V.I.P. Day, they got to dress as one of their characters, display their trifold which tells more about their story, and read their stories to students, parents, grandparents, teachers, etc.  It was A LOT OF FUN!!!!!  Please click on the link below to watch our video.  Enjoy!  :)
