Meet Mrs. Erin Schmidt, our School Guidance Counselor

This year, Mrs. Schmidt will be working with the students on character education.  Each month, she will be focusing on one character trait at a time.  This month's character trait is "courage."  She talked to the students how we need to have courage a lot at school to try new things, to challenge ourselves, etc. That also goes right along with our Growth Mindset unit.  She read us part of the book called "Creepy Carrots" and had us write one of our fears on a carrot.  Then she will put them on a poster in our hallway to remind us that we are the ones who has the most power to overcome our fears.

Growth Mindset

We have been talking about "fixed mindsets" and "growth mindsets" and how they can either help or interfere with our learning.  We talked about how the "fixed mindset" phrases gave us an uncomfortable feeling in our tummies, but the "growth mindset" phrases made us feel a lot stronger. It reminded us of the Credit Karma commercial where two co-workers are making fun of another workers' credit score.  Then that worker says, "You know what?   Yeah, my credit score is not so great.  But it's a lot better than it used to be, and at least I'm actually doing something about it!"  Having a "growth mindset" is exactly that.  Never settling.  Always trying to improve yourself.  Not getting frustrated and giving up.  Working as hard as you can and giving it 110%.  :)

Reading with a Buddy:)

This week, we reread our Reading story with a buddy.  We talked about how we should sit with our buddies so that we can help each  other with words in case we get stuck.  We need to sit "EEKK" which means 'elbow to elbow, knee to knee.'  We also talked about what it means to "whisper" instead of talking.  When we whisper, we cannot feel vibrations on our throats.  But, when we talk, we do feel vibrations.  Another thing that we talked about was how should we take turns reading.  We decided that it would be good to have one person read one page, and then the next one read the next page and so on.  Finally, we talked about how we can "quiz" each other about what we just read. That way we are checking to see if each of us understood the story.  If not, then we will reread the parts that were confusing before we take the AR test individually.

FLIP-OUT!!!!

Last Friday, we learned how to play a new game called "Flip-Out!"  It is a Math game where you have to roll two dice, add the dots on the dice together, and flip over and cover the numbers on the board game that it equals to.  For example, if you roll a 9, you can either cover the 9 or the 8 and 1 or the 7 and 2 and so on.  You can cover as many numbers as you need in order to equal the number that you rolled.  However, if  you roll something that you cannot cover, then you are done.  For instance, if you roll a 4, but you have no way of making a 4, you are done.  Then you have to add up the numbers that are left on your board, and that will be your score.  The lowest score wins.  And... if you end up covering ALL the numbers, you get a "FLIP-OUT!"  Those are always exciting!  :)

Of course, when playing any type of game, there are always problem-solving skills and strategies that you should use.  Like, for "Flip-Out," since the lowest score wins, you'll want to cover your biggest numbers first.  And, one of the biggest tricks is NOT to use your 2 unless you HAVE to.  Because if you use your 2, and then you roll a 2 ("Snake Eyes"), then you are done.  You'd have to add up all of those  numbers left, and odds are, you probably would not have the lowest score.

By the way, don't mind our robes and stuffed animals.  It was a Spirit and Pride Friday, and the theme was "Nighty Night Knights" since we were playing the Crestview Knights in football.

Raider Time

We ❤ Raider Time!  Raider Time is like a mini-study hall.  It is when we can get caught up on something that we didn't quite finish during the day.  It is also when we can ask Mrs. Pfeiffer for help on something like Math homework if we didn't quite "get it" during that class.  We can also get extra help from people like Mrs. Laukhuf, our Math tutor, and Mrs. Krouse, our Title 1 teacher.  If we don't need any extra help with anything that day, we can choose to do something on our own like reading AR books, taking AR quizzes, reading with a buddy, listening to our reading story online, practicing our Spelling words and/or our vocabulary words online on Spelling City, etc.
